Clock Props Vintage and Antique Clocks

Clock Props

Roger Lascelles has spent the past 30 years building a collection of vintage and antique clocks that is second to none. In the premises of the old Wandsworth clock factory Roger maintains a collection of over 500 clocks, ranging from antique grandfather clocks to huge external turret dials, from Bakerlite mantels to old French enamels. Roger still frequents antique markets and auction houses at home and abroad and with the help of a small team of skilled craftsmen, will often enjoy reviving an old electric clock that has seen better days, into a fully functional clock using a modern quartz movement, while maintaining all the charm and character of the original. Roger’s latest venture, clockprops.com is to offer many old and interesting clocks for sale or to hire. So if you are looking to decorate a film set or just want to own a piece of clock history this website will be an indispensible source.

French Loft

French Loft

Rowland realised his was an unusual enthusiasm for 6am starts to scour the antique fairs and French markets - he is a buyer at heart and he has a great eye for outstanding and creative finds. French Loft, the name given to the interior design, furniture and home goods business, is based in an old brewery building, in a quiet street a stones throw from Arundel medieval castle. The chosen objects which fill the warehouse are a personification of Rowland's taste - the faded French 19th Century armoires, Marie therese chandeliers, and the reupholstered Louis XVI style chairs. Rowland does things in a fantastically unsnobbish way and his approach to design is very levelheaded. It's never about the latest thing, but where beauty and utility are intrinsic to objects you like to see, touch and use everyday.

Hudson Antiques

Hudson Antiques

Darren Hudson first started his antiques career in 1992 when he went to work for the renowned dealer Patricia Harvey at her Marylebone shop and her Decorative Antiques Fair. After a few years of learning the decorative Antiques market he decided to venture out on his own and set up Hudson Grove Antiques and along with his friend David Groves took a shop neighbouring Patricia’s. Having run the shop successfully for many years, including moving to larger premises, Darren accepted the trend towards internet buying. Running a shop with its associated cost was making it difficult to be competitive. With that in mind he moved to a warehouse in 2015 and now operates through this website and continues to exhibit at the highly popular, thrice yearly, Decorative Antiques Fair. With the extra time not having to man a shop it allows more time for searching for the best things from around Europe and the UK. It also allows for Interior Designers, Trade and private clients to find the most interesting items at very competitive prices with a personal, friendly service. In 2016 he will be joined in the business by his girlfriend, Amber, who having proved herself in the past will be joining full time to help add a feminine eye to the business. They can now offer restoration, transport and are happy to search for specific pieces on their twice monthly trips to Europe.

TheKula

TheKula

'your upholstery is like fine tailoring' Sophie Conran

My name is Christine Shepherd, a Londoner by birth, entrepreneur and a free spirit by nature with a passion for chairs, lighting and art. And owner of TheKula.

We specialise in unusual and elegant chairs from the 1930’s – 1950’s and vintage lamps created by renowned Spanish manufacturer ‘fase’ of Madrid. Our chairs are for the discerning customer, those that seek quality and individuality as all our chairs are one-off, unique, beautiful creations. We also have a selection of handpicked tables, paintings and decorative items in our premises at 52 High Street, Old Town Hastings.

A little about me .....My passion for design and interiors developed in 2007, whilst living in Andalucia, Spain, when I was given the opportunity to remodel 33 rooms of Hotel Punta Sur in Tarifa. Delighted with the outcome the owners then commissioned me to design three new suites and remodel the lounge and restaurant areas.

In 2010 I returned to the UK and whilst wondering what to do next (I did say I was a free spirit) I began to see the mid-century chairs and ‘fase’ lamps that I had used in Spain in various lifestyle magazines. I thought to myself ‘I know where to find those!’ It was a ‘eureka’ moment and TheKula UK was born.

I source furnishings that inspire me, that make me gasp with excitement as soon as I see them …. and those that I can carry! What began with a weekly stall in Spitalfields Antique Market, London has developed into a small, but gorgeous shop in Hastings Old Town. My clients come from all walks of life with one thing in common …. an eye for beautiful things.

Marchand Antiques

Marchand Antiques

Marchand Antiques has been established since 1994. The business was founded by Mark Lock, who is responsible for sourcing the stock from all over the British Isles and Europe, mainly sourcing from Sweden, Denmark, France and Italy. Marchand is a true family business and Mark is assisted by his wife Jacqueline, who heads up the sales team aided by Fiona, and their daughter Francesca, who looks after the IT and photography. Even Mark's father Vic looks after deliveries and collections. In Marchand's early days the business started in the classic way, by Mark operating as a runner, trading from his van. This soon flourished, and Mark took a space in Alfie's antique market to house the ever increasing stock. In the early days the core of the business was the London and overseas trade, but that rapidly expanded to include discerning private buyers and internationally renowned interior decorators, along with an increasing list of celebrity clients, who appreciate the discreet and reliable service. Marchand now have a large warehouse on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Arundel in West Sussex, which is viewable by appointment. Marchand stocks a wide variety of antiques, covering all the decorating styles and periods. We have stock from the 16th century through to the 20th century, including items in many styles including antique country furniture in oak and walnut, antique French and Swedish painted furniture, industrial, modernist, art deco, art nouveau, arts and crafts and mid-20th century designer items, through to garden and architectural antiques. Marchand's buying and stocking policy is quite simple: each piece is selected for its quality and uniqueness, and its ability to stand out on its own as the anchor piece for a room, or to complement a mood that has already been established. Marchand's style is hard to define, as it strives to be as unstylised as possible, by mixing periods and styles, and selecting items that work together regardless of period and style. This gives Marchand its strong and distinctive look, which has developed over the years.

Specialist Article by Stuart Shuster

Specialist Article by Stuart Shuster

As most of you will know, my shop is in Church Street, London, NW8 8ED. I have been trading there for about 32 years & have seen many changes myself. In fact, I am now the oldest individual shop here & unfortunately, probably the oldest dealer in the street.

Church Street is quite renowned for antiques, trendy furniture & decorative items. We have Alfie's Antique Market & many other shops in the street, all of who make it a very attractive venue. The location is also very convenient, with Marylebone, Edgware Road & Baker Street train stations nearby - plus, we are not in the Congestion Charge Zone & there is easy & cheap parking in the street. There is also a very reasonable car park nearby for about £2 an hour.

Unfortunately, amongst the original items, there are quite a few brand new items & some of them are being passed off as original by unscrupulous dealers. You will find this happens in all areas of the country & online too.
I don’t have any problem with dealers selling these items, but I do hate it when they are being passed off as original. It also gives the street a bad name. What happens is that a very small minority represent the items as old & original by clever marketing methods. Often they will mix new items in with old items so you don’t notice.

There is a very simple way to protect yourselves from making the mistake of buying something new & often mass produced.
All you need to do is ask for a written receipt, stating the age of the item & the same if buying online. If they are a reputable dealer, then they will have no problem with that. If they won’t give you that, then don’t buy.
I wouldn’t worry so much about whether it’s 1950’s, 1930’s, 1910, 1860’s, etc. As long as there’s a rough dateline, you will know if it’s new or not.

Actually, online is more worrying for misrepresentation, but again it’s very easy to protect yourselves. Just ask the relevant dealer if the item is new or roughly how old. Look out for long vivid descriptions about the original maker or designer, which are often copied out of wikipedia or something like that. These are often put in there to impress you & divert you from the actual age of the piece.

Please be aware that most of the dealers in the antiques trade are honest & genuine people, but as always the minority can give us all a bad name.

So, once again, don’t be afraid to ask the obvious question about the age.
Regards, Stuart
